A file manager for the lazy
Description and use
The sloth tool automatically organizes college files by subject and unit using a local Gemma model and OCR, creating a folder hierarchy while keeping all data local and reversible.
Problem
Users download many files with ambiguous names and struggle to organize them before they become a mess.
Outcome
Automated sorting of college materials reduces manual effort and prevents file clutter, while keeping all data local and reversible.
Workflow
- Scan file content with Tesseract OCR (first ~3000 characters).
- Send extracted text to local Gemma model via Ollama to predict subject and unit.
- Generate a dry‑run plan of moves.
- Execute moves only after user confirmation.
- Log each batch for potential undo.
- Provide sloth undo command to restore original locations.
Evidence
sloth reads what's inside your notes, slides and scanned handouts. It asks a local Gemma model (through Ollama) which subject and unit each file belongs to, and files it under: ~/Documents/College/<Subject>/Unit <N>/<original filename>
Nothing leaves your laptop. sloth only talks to Ollama on 127.0.0.1.
Nothing is deleted or overwritten. Files are only moved. If a name is taken, the file becomes name (2).pdf.
Everything can be undone. Every batch of moves is logged, and sloth undo puts the files back exactly where they were.
