Automated Night Shift vs. Manual Day Shift: A Developer Workflow Case Study
A developer duplicated work because they relied on stale mental state rather than checking the actual status of an automated queue, leading to redundant feature implementation by both an unattended agent and a human-in-the-loop agent.
Результат
The duplication of work revealed that mechanical rails are effective, but human memory is unreliable. The final product benefited from both approaches: the night shift provided cleaner architecture, while the day shift identified and fixed a live-deployment issue. The workflow was improved by adding a visual board to display task status.
Рабочий процесс
- Nightly headless agent drains queue entries.
- Agent builds feature on an isolated branch.
- Agent records design decisions and stops before deployment due to safety rails.
- Agent generates a report with instructions for morning review.
- Morning developer checks queue status (initially failed, later fixed via board generation).
- Developer reviews night shift's work and their own implementation.
- Developer merges the best parts of both implementations.
- System updates to generate a visual board for queue status to prevent future duplication.
Доказательства
The night run took the entry properly, flipped its status, built the whole thing on an isolated branch, recorded its design decisions, and then stopped one step short on purpose.
The morning shift was me, working with an interactive agent. And we built the same feature again, from scratch, on the main branch, and deployed it.
The queue now generates a one-page board from the entries, and taken sits as its own section on it.
