Avoid Manual Job Tracking on Reddit with Python Automation

Description and use

A Python script automatically scrapes DevOps job posts from r/devops, extracts title, subreddit, link, posted time, and infers remote status, then writes the data to a CSV file.

Problem

Manual tracking of DevOps jobs on Reddit is tedious, error‑prone, and does not scale.

Outcome

The script produces a structured CSV of recent DevOps job posts, eliminating manual effort and reducing errors.

Workflow

  • 1. Create Reddit API credentials (client_id, client_secret, user_agent).
  • 2. Build request headers with User‑Agent and bearer token.
  • 3. GET https://api.reddit.com/r/devops/hot to retrieve JSON of hot posts.
  • 4. Parse JSON to extract title, subreddit, url, created_utc, and detect "remote" in title.
  • 5. Write extracted fields to devops_jobs.csv using csv.DictWriter.
  • 6. Sleep 1 second between requests to respect Reddit rate limits.
  • 7. Optionally limit daily fetches and add custom filters.

Evidence

The core idea is to use the requests library to fetch Reddit’s API and parse the JSON response.

Source

It also checks if the word "remote" appears in the title, marking the job as remote.
