BUI: Your App, the Browser’s UI

Description and use

BUI lets developers build lightweight web UIs for local apps, reducing installer size and leveraging browser tooling, while needing careful API security and cross‑browser testing.

Problem

Developers need lightweight, web‑based UIs for local applications that run long‑running background tasks, but packaging a full browser engine or building a native GUI is heavy and complex.

Outcome

BUI enables developers to deliver lightweight, web‑based UIs for local apps, reducing installer size, leveraging web tooling, and keeping the backend independent. It works well for tools that need quick UI interactions while running long background tasks.

Workflow

  • 1. Implement core logic in a local backend (e.g., Go, Python).
  • 2. Expose a REST/GraphQL/gRPC API on localhost.
  • 3. Serve a web UI that consumes the API.
  • 4. On launch, start the backend and open the default browser to the local URL.
  • 5. Optionally provide a CLI that interacts with the same API, sharing sessions if desired.
  • 6. Secure the local API with loopback binding, origin checks, auth, and CSRF protection.
  • 7. Package the backend and a launcher; the browser remains external.
  • 8. Test across browsers for layout and performance.
  • 9. Deploy and update the backend independently of the UI.

Evidence

A local program serves a web interface and exposes an API. The browser handles layout and interaction; the program handles the work.

Source

No bundled browser engine to distribute.

Source

A secure local API: loopback binding, Host/Origin validation, appropriate authentication, and CSRF protection.
