Building RecallForge: an offline study workspace with source-linked practice
Description and use
RecallForge is an offline, source‑linked study workspace that stores all data locally in IndexedDB, offers reproducible mock exams, and provides encrypted portable backups.
Problem
Learners need a repeatable loop between practice, mistake review and revision that works offline and keeps study data local.
Outcome
RecallForge enables repeatable study loops offline, preserves source links, offers reproducible mock exams, and provides encrypted portable backups.
Workflow
- Build a single HTML distribution with runtime, fonts, PDF worker and sample packs.
- Import a validated JSON pack into the viewer.
- Study questions with immediate feedback and timing.
- Use the retest feature to focus on wrong or skipped questions.
- Schedule daily revision passes over saved questions.
- Export the workspace as a JSON backup (plain or password‑encrypted).
- Restore the backup on another device to recover all data and sources.
Evidence
The viewer uses JavaScript, HTML and CSS. IndexedDB stores packs, sources, attempts, unfinished sessions and revision data.
The built distribution is a single HTML file containing its runtime, fonts, PDF worker and samples, so the viewer can also be opened offline.
Backups support plain JSON or optional password encryption, previewed merge or replace, and one restore recovery snapshot.
Browser-local storage makes the app usable without an account service, but the data belongs to that browser profile and site address.
