Check a site's response from different countries with Shellroute
Description and use
Using Shellroute, you can send identical requests through proxies from different countries and compare responses to identify localization and redirect differences.
Problem
Websites may serve different content or redirects based on the visitor's country, causing inconsistent behavior for users and developers.
Outcome
By routing identical curl requests through US and Germany proxies, the developer observed that Google Store redirects to different language settings (hl=en-US vs hl=de). This demonstrates how country‑based routing can affect application behavior and provides a repeatable method to investigate similar issues on other sites.
Workflow
- Open a normal terminal and run
curl -sSI https://store.google.com/ | grep -i '^location:'to capture the redirect from the local connection. - Install Shellroute (
npm install -g shellroute shellroute login) and log in. - Start a routed shell and connect to the US with
/connect US. Run the same curl command to capture the US redirect. - Start another routed shell and connect to Germany with
/connect DE. Run the same curl command to capture the German redirect. - Compare the
Locationheaders from the three terminals to see language differences. - If needed, use
curl -ito fetch full headers and body, or copy a browser request as cURL and run it through each routed shell. - After investigation, exit the routed shells with
/exitor/disconnect.
Evidence
Shellroute gives each shell its own proxy IP. Pick a country and use the terminal normally.
In the recording, this returned: location: https://store.google.com/?hl=en-US
Our German connection returned: location: https://store.google.com/?hl=de
