Excel to Visio After Data Visualizer Retirement: 3 Practical Workflows

Description and use

After the Visio Data Visualizer add‑in was retired, three workflows remain to convert Excel/CSV data into editable Visio diagrams: (1) Visio Plan 2 desktop Data Visualizer, (2) AI‑generated Mermaid code, and (3) AI‑to‑VSDX via VSDXAI. Clean the spreadsheet first and review the output.

Problem

The Visio Data Visualizer add‑in for Excel was retired, breaking existing workflows that convert spreadsheet data into editable Visio diagrams.

Outcome

All three workflows produce editable Visio diagrams or VSDX files, enabling continued delivery of process visuals after the add‑in retirement.

Workflow

  • Prepare a clean Excel table with unique IDs, descriptions, next‑step IDs, connector labels, swimlane owners, and phases.
  • Choose a workflow:
  • • Visio Plan 2: open Visio, select Data Visualizer template, map columns, generate diagram (two‑way sync).
  • • AI diagram code: prompt AI to output Mermaid code, review, import into editor, convert to VSDX if needed.
  • • AI‑to‑VSDX: upload workbook and supporting docs to VSDXAI, review plan, export editable VSDX.
  • Export or share the resulting VSDX file.

Evidence

Microsoft removed the add‑in from AppSource in December 2025 and retired it on March 2, 2026.
