Fighting Decision Fatigue: How ClimbStack was Born

Description and use

ClimbStack is a free Android app that helps users overcome decision fatigue through gamified daily routines, is fully offline and open‑source.

Problem

The author was paralyzed by decision fatigue and could not find a productivity app that offered the needed tools without a subscription paywall.

Outcome

ClimbStack is a free, offline‑first productivity app that helps users overcome decision fatigue through gamified daily routines, available on Google Play and open‑source on GitHub.

Workflow

  • 1. Identify decision fatigue problem and lack of suitable apps.
  • 2. Decide to build a custom solution using React Native, SQLite, Typescript, i18n, CI/CD.
  • 3. Design core identity around gamification and trekking analogy.
  • 4. Implement five basecamps: Today, Peaks, Planner, Blocks, Settings.
  • 5. Ensure 100% offline‑first data storage with local SQLite and JSON backups.
  • 6. Publish code on GitHub and release app on Google Play Store.
  • 7. Invite community contributions via issues and PRs.

Evidence

Too often, I’d find myself paralyzed by decision fatigue, mindlessly scrolling on my phone instead of doing something that actually helped me grow or learn something new.

Source

I wanted to engineer my own solution—something that could genuinely help me, and hopefully others, overcome this exact problem.

Source

The application is built around five main basecamps: Today, Peaks, Planner, Blocks, Settings.

ClimbStack is designed to be 100% offline‑first, meaning you can use it wherever you are... The app relies on a local SQLite database.

The application has been developed—and will continuously evolve—in a fully open‑source ecosystem. All the code is publicly available on GitHub: https://github.com/ClimbStack/climbstack-app.
