How I Fixed Flutter Web’s Annoying Page Reload Problem
Description and use
By employing flutter_web_storage, Flutter web apps retain state and routes across page reloads, eliminating data loss and startup flicker.
Problem
Flutter web apps lose in‑memory state and navigation history on page refresh, causing UX issues like lost form data, reset filters, stale admin views, and route loss.
Outcome
The app now retains form drafts, filter selections, admin changes, and deep‑link routes after a browser refresh, with no startup flicker and instant cross‑tab sync.
Workflow
- 1. Add flutter_web_storage to pubspec.yaml
- 2. Import FlutterWebStorage and obtain instance
- 3. Use setString, setStringList, etc. to persist data synchronously in initState or constructors
- 4. Register WebRoutePreserverNavigatorObserver to restore routes on boot
- 5. Optionally listen to storage events for real‑time cross‑tab updates
Evidence
flutter_web_storage bypasses the asynchronous microtask queue entirely
Cross‑Tab Event Broadcasting (window.onStorage) instantly updates Tab B
