How We Migrated from Heroku Postgres to AWS RDS
Description and use
Migrating from Heroku Postgres to AWS RDS PostgreSQL reduced latency, improved scalability, and lowered costs.
Problem
Heroku Postgres was limiting scalability and cost control for Wootric’s growing database needs.
Outcome
The migration reduced database latency, improved scalability, and lowered monthly costs while maintaining data integrity and application uptime.
Workflow
- 1. Assessed current Heroku Postgres usage and identified performance metrics.
- 2. Selected AWS RDS PostgreSQL as target platform and configured instance size.
- 3. Created a read replica of the Heroku database to capture live data.
- 4. Performed a full data dump from Heroku and restored it into RDS.
- 5. Updated application configuration to point to the new RDS endpoint.
- 6. Conducted thorough testing to ensure data integrity and application stability.
- 7. Decommissioned the Heroku Postgres instance after successful validation.
Evidence
We migrated from Heroku Postgres to AWS RDS PostgreSQL
We created a read replica of the Heroku database to capture live data
After the migration, we saw a significant drop in latency and cost
