How We Migrated from Heroku to Amazon Web Services (AWS) Using Docker
Description and use
The team migrated their application from Heroku to AWS using Docker, Elastic Beanstalk, RDS, and ElastiCache, reducing costs and increasing infrastructure control.
Problem
The team needed to move their application from Heroku to AWS to gain more control over infrastructure and reduce costs.
Outcome
The migration completed with minimal downtime, improved scalability, and lower operational overhead.
Workflow
- 1. Containerized the application with Docker.
- 2. Created a Dockerfile and docker-compose.yml for local development.
- 3. Pushed the image to Amazon ECR.
- 4. Configured Elastic Beanstalk to use the Docker image.
- 5. Migrated the PostgreSQL database to Amazon RDS.
- 6. Migrated Redis to ElastiCache.
- 7. Updated environment variables and secrets.
- 8. Tested the application in the new environment.
- 9. Decommissioned the Heroku deployment.
Evidence
We containerized the application with Docker and pushed the image to Amazon ECR.
We migrated the PostgreSQL database to Amazon RDS and Redis to ElastiCache.
