How we moved from Heroku to AWS using Docker
Description and use
Migrated a web app from Heroku to AWS using Docker: containerized, deployed to ECS, migrated PostgreSQL to RDS, and set up CI/CD.
Problem
The team needed to migrate a production application from Heroku to AWS while maintaining continuous deployment and scaling capabilities.
Outcome
The migration completed with minimal downtime, improved cost control, and enhanced scalability.
Workflow
- 1. Containerized the application using Docker.
- 2. Set up an Amazon ECS cluster and task definitions.
- 3. Migrated the PostgreSQL database to Amazon RDS.
- 4. Configured CI/CD pipelines to build and push Docker images to Amazon ECR.
- 5. Updated environment variables and secrets in AWS Parameter Store.
- 6. Deployed the new ECS services and verified functionality.
- 7. Decommissioned Heroku resources.
Evidence
We containerized the application using Docker and deployed it to Amazon ECS.
