How we moved from Heroku to AWS using Docker
Description and use
The team migrated their app from Heroku to AWS using Docker, ECS, RDS, and ElastiCache, reducing costs and improving scalability.
Problem
The team needed to move their application from Heroku to AWS to gain more control over infrastructure and reduce costs.
Outcome
The migration completed with minimal downtime, improved scalability, and a 30% reduction in monthly hosting costs.
Workflow
- 1. Containerized the application using Docker and created a Dockerfile.
- 2. Built Docker images and pushed them to Amazon ECR.
- 3. Configured AWS ECS task definitions and services to run the containers.
- 4. Migrated the PostgreSQL database to Amazon RDS and updated connection strings.
- 5. Migrated Redis to Amazon ElastiCache and updated configuration.
- 6. Updated DNS and load balancer settings to point to the new ECS service.
- 7. Decommissioned the Heroku app and verified application health.
Evidence
