How we moved from Heroku to AWS using Docker
Description and use
Migrating from Heroku to AWS using Docker reduced costs and provided full infrastructure control.
Problem
Our application was hosted on Heroku, but we needed more control over the infrastructure, cost predictability, and the ability to run custom Docker containers.
Outcome
The migration completed in a few days, reducing monthly hosting costs by 30% and giving the team full control over the runtime environment.
Workflow
- 1. Containerized the application using a Dockerfile.
- 2. Built the Docker image locally and pushed it to Amazon ECR.
- 3. Created an Elastic Beanstalk environment configured for Docker.
- 4. Deployed the Docker image to Elastic Beanstalk via the EB CLI.
- 5. Configured environment variables and scaling settings in Elastic Beanstalk.
- 6. Tested the deployment and switched DNS to the new environment.
Evidence
We decided to containerize our application using Docker to gain more control over the deployment process.
After pushing the image to Amazon ECR, we created an Elastic Beanstalk environment configured for Docker.
