I Built a New Tab Extension for DEV
Description and use
DEV Tab replaces the new tab page with a DEV feed, adding search, filters, and a personal dashboard when an API key is provided.
Problem
Users spend a lot of time on DEV and want a convenient way to explore posts without navigating to the site.
Outcome
The extension provides a quick, customizable feed of DEV posts, search, tag filtering, keyboard navigation, and a personal analytics dashboard when an API key is supplied, improving the user’s workflow for exploring and managing DEV content.
Workflow
- Install the DEV Tab extension from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox add‑on repository.
- Open a new tab to view the DEV feed.
- Use tag filters, search, or keyboard navigation to browse posts.
- Optionally add a DEV API key in settings to unlock the personal dashboard and additional features.
- Interact with posts by clicking to open them on DEV.
- Use the dashboard to view activity statistics and heatmaps.
- Use the shortcut to create a new DEV post directly from the new tab page.
Evidence
I built one. It's called DEV Tab, and it's a free, open-source browser extension that replaces your new tab page with a feed of posts from DEV.
The dashboard includes your follower count, views, reactions, comments, and new followers, with options to look at the last 7, 30, or 90 days.
You can't directly react to posts, leave comments, or save articles to your reading list from the extension.
