I Built an Autonomous GitHub Trending Tracker with Star Velocity & MCP Topic Radars 🚀
Description and use
An autonomous GitHub trending tracker that displays star velocity and emerging MCP topics, built with zero maintenance and automated updates.
Problem
GitHub’s native trending page lacks real‑time star velocity data and advanced topic filters for fast‑growing ecosystems, making it hard for developers to spot breakout projects early.
Outcome
The project delivers a zero‑maintenance, real‑time dashboard that shows trending GitHub repos, star velocity, and niche topic filters, enabling developers to spot viral projects quickly.
Workflow
- 1. GitHub Actions triggers every 12 hours to run engine.py
- 2. engine.py scrapes trending repos from 6 ecosystems and extracts metrics
- 3. Engine classifies repos by semantic tags (#MCP, #Coding-Agents, #AI-Video, #Security)
- 4. Generates daily archives and an RSS 2.0 feed
- 5. Commits updates to the repo automatically
- 6. GitHub Pages serves a lightweight vanilla HTML/CSS/JS dashboard with search, sorting, and clone command copy
Evidence
Scheduled GitHub Actions runs automatically every 12 hours (at 00:00 UTC and 12:00 UTC).
Pure Vanilla HTML, CSS & JavaScript — no heavy frameworks or complicated build steps.
