I Built Hush Relay: A Self-Hosted Encrypted Messenger Using Vanilla JavaScript and One PHP File
Описание и применение
Hush Relay – минимальный самодостаточный мессенджер, работающий в браузере и на одном PHP‑файле, без регистрации и телефонных номеров, с энд‑то‑энд шифрованием и возможностью локального хостинга.
Задача
How much infrastructure do two people actually need to exchange encrypted messages?
Результат
Hush Relay demonstrates that a minimal server can provide end‑to‑end encrypted messaging without centralized identity services, using only a single PHP file and browser‑based cryptography.
Рабочий процесс
- Generate a local cryptographic identity in the browser
- Create an invitation containing the public key, mailbox ID, and relay address
- Exchange invitation via QR code or link
- Send encrypted messages through the PHP relay
- Relay stores envelopes temporarily and routes them to the recipient's mailbox
- Recipient decrypts messages locally in the browser
- Use recovery words or device migration to restore or move accounts
Доказательства
No phone numbers. No registration. No centralized messaging provider. No frontend build pipeline. Just a browser, encryption, and a lightweight relay you can host yourself.
The relay is intentionally limited in responsibility. It accepts encrypted message envelopes, stores them temporarily, delivers them to the appropriate mailbox, and removes acknowledged or expired messages.
Hush Relay uses the browser's native WebCrypto API.
The repository includes deployment instructions for shared hosting, VPS environments, Android/Termux, and IPFS-based distribution of the static client.
