I mapped 66 JVM internal components into an interactive 2D/3D explorer (Open Source)

Description and use

JVM Atlas is an interactive 2D/3D explorer that maps 66 JVM components and traces execution from Java source to native machine code.

Problem

Understanding JVM internals is hard with static diagrams or the JVMS; developers cannot see how components interact at runtime.

Outcome

JVM Atlas provides a single source of truth for JVM internals, enabling beginners and experienced developers to understand runtime behavior through interactive exploration.

Workflow

  • 1. Deploy the static site on Vercel or GitHub Pages.
  • 2. Open https://jvmatlas.vercel.app or the mirror URL.
  • 3. Choose a component node and switch between Simple, Developer, and Deep Dive tiers.
  • 4. Follow guided execution walkthroughs to see bytecode verification, interpreter loops, and JIT tiering in action.
  • 5. Inspect connectivity among ClassLoader subsystems, Heap/Metaspace, PC registers, C1/C2 JIT compilers, and GC phases.

Evidence

I built JVM Atlas, an interactive 2D and 3D architecture explorer that maps 66 internal components and traces code execution step-by-step from .java source down to native machine execution.

Source

It is a static site. There is no backend, database, account, analytics or paid service, and after the first visit it keeps working offline.
