I turned a GitHub star count into a sky you can drag into shape

Description and use

An interactive sky image that displays a GitHub repo’s star count and timestamp, customizable and shareable via a URL fragment.

Problem

When a project reaches a milestone, a screenshot of the star counter feels impersonal; a more engaging thank‑you is desired.

Outcome

The solution allows users to create a personalized thank‑you sky image that embeds the star count and timestamp, shareable via a URL fragment without further API calls.

Workflow

  • Paste owner/repo or GitHub link
  • Page requests star count via GitHub API (unauthenticated)
  • Drag stars into a shape
  • Tap stars to join them
  • Write a line up to 40 characters
  • Save as 1080×1350 PNG or copy link

Evidence

The page asks the GitHub API for the star count, once, with no token.

Source

The picture always prints the exact count and the time it was read.

Source

The whole sky is one small object: a theme, the repository and its count, when it was read, the caption, 64 points and up to 32 lines.

Source

Chinese captions use the device's own fonts. The read time comes from the device clock because GitHub does not expose its Date header to pages.
