Keeping credentials out of your coding agent’s model context
Description and use
ContextVeil removes selected secrets from coding agent output, preventing accidental exposure while keeping file access intact.
Problem
Coding agents often read files containing credentials, risking accidental exposure of secrets in their model context.
Outcome
ContextVeil successfully removes selected secret values from agent output, reducing accidental credential exposure without blocking legitimate file reads or commands.
Workflow
- 1. Install ContextVeil via the provided shell script.
- 2. Run
contextveil setupin the project directory to review and select secrets to protect. - 3. Integrate ContextVeil with the chosen coding agent (e.g., Claude Code) by approving the hook.
- 4. Use the coding agent as usual; ContextVeil automatically sanitizes output before it reaches the model.
- 5. Run
contextveil doctorto verify the integration and troubleshoot if needed.
Evidence
ContextVeil changes the supported tool result before it reaches the model: DATABASE_URL=postgres://localhost/my_app API_TOKEN=<SECRET:API_TOKEN> LOG_LEVEL=debug
ContextVeil supports Linux (including WSL) and macOS. Install it with: curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/daniel-sc/contextveil/v1.0.0/install.sh | bash
