Novadesk: Build Desktop Widgets with JavaScript and C++ Power
Description and use
Novadesk lets developers build lightweight, high‑performance desktop widgets with JavaScript, backed by a C++ core for rendering and system APIs.
Problem
Existing desktop widget solutions either require a custom language, are too heavy, or lack deep system integration.
Outcome
Novadesk enables developers to create lightweight, high‑performance desktop widgets in JavaScript with native system integration, achieving smooth 60fps animations and low CPU/RAM usage.
Workflow
- Clone the Novadesk repo
- Run Setup.ps1 to build the C++ core
- Use the nwm CLI to initialize a new widget project
- Write widget logic in JavaScript using the novadesk API
- Package the widget with .ndpkg format
- Deploy the widget via the built‑in manager
Evidence
I wanted something different: Performance matters. Desktop widgets run 24/7. I didn't want something eating RAM and CPU in the background.
QuickJS made this possible without the overhead of Node.js.
