Request Validation at the Edge: A Minimal Pattern I Reuse
Description and use
Edge request validation reduces wasted compute by rejecting malformed requests before origin logic executes.
Problem
Reject malformed or oversized requests before they reach backend logic to save compute and reduce noise.
Outcome
Edge validation cuts wasted function runs by half on a noisy endpoint, reduces compute costs, and centralizes shape checks in a single stateless layer.
Workflow
- 1. Inspect Content-Length; reject 413 if too large.
- 2. Check Content-Type; reject 415 if not JSON.
- 3. Parse JSON body with try/catch; return 400 on parse error.
- 4. Run lightweight shape validator on required fields, types, and size limits.
- 5. Return 400 with aggregated errors if any.
- 6. If validation passes, forward request to origin logic.
Evidence
Reject bad requests at the edge before they touch real logic or a database
Returning 400 early cut wasted function runs on one endpoint by half
Edge runtimes bill differently from full origin invocations, and a request that gets rejected in 3ms barely registers
