The Suitcase Test Before Monday
Description and use
An isolated test workflow validates the waitlist endpoint in a clean environment, eliminating hidden dependencies and ensuring reliable deployment before the deadline.
Problem
A founder needed to verify a waitlist endpoint worked correctly before a deadline, but local environment issues caused failures.
Outcome
The isolated test workflow caught a hidden dependency, allowing the founder to deploy a reliable waitlist endpoint before Monday without incurring extra cloud costs.
Workflow
- 1. Create a clean clone of the repo in an empty directory. 2. Ensure the repo boots from a lockfile and does not read the founder’s home directory. 3. Run unit tests that start a local HTTP server and send POST requests to the /waitlist endpoint. 4. Verify the server returns 201 for valid plain emails and 400 for invalid inputs. 5. Merge the patch only after the tests pass in this isolated environment.
- 6. Deploy the patch to production knowing it has been validated in a minimal setup.
Evidence
A leftover virtualenv had hidden the real breakage. A local secret file had fed the client.
The repo must boot from a lockfile. Tests must not read the founder's home directory.
