The tools I actually use
Description and use
The author uses chezmoi to manage dotfiles and Atuin to search shell history, speeding up new machine setup and command retrieval.
Problem
Managing consistent dotfile configurations across multiple machines while keeping secrets separate, and retrieving shell history efficiently across devices.
Outcome
The author can now quickly bootstrap new machines and retrieve any past command across devices, reducing time spent on setup and script creation.
Workflow
- 1. Install chezmoi and clone the dotfiles repository.
2. Configure machine-specific templates and secret sources.
3. Run
chezmoi applyto set up the environment. 4. Install Atuin and configure it to sync with an encrypted server. 5. Use Atuin’s search to retrieve past commands instead of manual history searches.
Evidence
Bootstrapping a new machine is now one command and a coffee.
Atuin replaces Ctrl‑R with a real search over a SQLite database of every command
