Why I Built ani-sync: The Zero-Buffering Terminal Anime Streamer with Multi-Cloud Sync
Description and use
ani-sync is a terminal anime player that eliminates buffering by using 64 parallel connections, RAM‑disk caching, and auto‑synchronizes progress across MyAnimeList, AniList, and Kitsu.
Problem
Streaming anime from a terminal is slow, requires manual scrobbling, and consumes heavy browser resources.
Outcome
ani-sync reduces buffering to 0 s, cuts RAM usage from 3 GB to ~30 MB, keeps CPU <5 % by GPU decoding, and automates multi‑platform progress sync.
Workflow
- 1. Install ani-sync via one‑liner or package manager
- 2. Search for anime with "ani-sync
<anime>" - 3. Stream with optional --skip for auto‑skip
- 4. Use "ani-sync continue" to resume last watched
- 5. Batch download with -d and episode range
- 6. Progress auto‑sync to MAL, AniList, Kitsu on episode finish
Evidence
64-Connection Parallel Swarm: By pulling 64 segments concurrently across multiple TCP sockets, entire 25‑minute episodes load in 3–5 seconds
Multi-Platform Background Sync: Marks progress simultaneously across MyAnimeList, AniList (GraphQL), and Kitsu (JSON:API) the moment an episode finishes.
