Why I built DiffSeek: reviewing code is the slow part now
Description and use
DiffSeek speeds up pull request reviews by hiding generated and already viewed files, showing progress badges in the file tree, and enabling quick identification of remaining work.
Problem
Pull requests grew longer with LLM-generated code while review time stayed the same, making review the bottleneck.
Outcome
Review time is reduced by quickly identifying remaining files to read, thanks to automatic hiding of generated and viewed files and visual progress indicators.
Workflow
- Open a PR on GitHub
- DiffSeek automatically hides files marked linguist-generated in .gitattributes and files already viewed
- Use the filter menu to toggle visibility of hidden files
- View progress badges on the file tree to see unread, partially reviewed, or fully reviewed items
- Click a folder badge to mark all its unread visible files as viewed
- Use filters to focus on specific CODEOWNERS, groups, or file formats
Evidence
Review became the step everything else waits on, and that's where I thought a small tool could help: make it easier to see which files still need a person to read them.
When you open a PR, generated files and files you've already viewed are hidden, and one click in the filter menu shows them again.
Each file and folder in GitHub's file tree gets a viewed badge: an empty circle while unread, a half-filled one when partly reviewed, a check once done.
DiffSeek works through your existing GitHub session, so private repos work without a token or account. It has no backend and collects no data.
